 Quiet –Time

    • What is a quiet time?
    • How often should I have a quiet time?
    • When should I have a quiet time?

à A quiet time is exactly what the word implies: a time where you get alone with God, that is quiet. A time to spend seeking God through prayer and the study of scripture.

 I.)     Why should I have a quiet time that involves the studying of scripture, Bible study?

Job 23:12 “I have not departed from the command of His lips;

      I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

Jeremiah 15:16 Your words were found and I ate them,
      And Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart;
      For I have been called by Your name,

     O LORD God of hosts.

2 Timothy 3:16-17All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

Psalms 119:71 It is good for me that I was afflicted,
      That I may learn Your statutes.
72    The law of Your mouth is better to me
      Than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

Psalms 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

 I.)     Why a quiet time that involves prayer?

1 Thessalonians 5:17 pray without ceasing;

Psalms 55:17 Evening, morning and noon, I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.

Psalms 62:8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Selah

Matthew 14:23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,

Luke 5:16 But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.

      II.)               How to get started:

A.)  Set a Time

Mark 1:35  In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.

Psalms 88:13 But I, O LORD, have cried out to You for help,
      And in the morning my prayer comes before You.

Psalms 143:8 Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning;

      For I trust in You; Teach me the way in which I should walk; For to You I lift up my soul.

B.)   Set a Place

Daniel 6:10  Now when Daniel knew that the document was signed, he entered his house (now in his roof chamber he had windows open toward Jerusalem); and he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously.

 Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

C.)     Organize your material:

 A BIBLE with maybe some of the following:

·        Notebook
·        Pens
·        Reference Book
·        Devotional
·        Journal

  +Remember it is ok to start off studying shorter passages, devotionals, etc and then work your way up.   (You have to crawl before you walk.)

  +The most important thing is that you be consistent in studying your bible.

 +Journaling:  means to write down your thoughts as you read the Scripture. What is the scripture saying, what is the Scripture convicting me of or encouraging me to do.

 +Always read the Scripture in context to the surrounding passages never add or take anything away from the Scripture.

 +Try to take notes during church while the preacher is preaching, this will help you focus and even provide quiet time material to go back and study.
